About Harmonic Dirt’s debut album “Anthracite”

We decided to start a blog about our band and our unique songwriting process. I hope you enjoy it! (This entry is prepared for you with great care by Susan.)

Susan Coleman, (that’s me!) the wife of Mike Gridley (lead singer and guitar/mando/banjo) and friend of Taylor Bucci (backup vocals, percussion/guitar/banjo) has the primary role of “lyricist.” I am learning the bass as well! (More about that adventure in a future post) My husband writes the musical accompaniment to my words. (Think: Taupin/John…Barlow/Weir….Hunter/Garcia…Yeah. We’re definitely in that caliber…🙄) We almost always write the lyrics 1st & music 2nd.

Taylor first heard some of our early attempts at songwriting and was very pleased! In fact, he moves to Central New York from California just to be a part of this newly-forming project. (Sorta true, sorta exaggerated…)

Back to the lyric-writing process: (Since I’m the one writing this particular blog!) I mostly just write what comes out of my brain. Sometimes songs are writing themselves inside me, then they spill onto the page when I take my notebook out. Other songs require a little more thought.
